If you are a Medicare recipient who has been in a car accident and file a personal injury claim, Medicare could pay for your medical treatment related to the injury claim, but there are important procedures and rules that you should be aware of – you may have to repay Medicare for those paid medical bills out of any personal injury award.
A typical scenario is the following – you have been injured in a car wreck and you provide your Medicare information to your doctor. Medical billing sends the bills to Medicare for payment, even though your car insurance should have paid the bill. As soon as Medicare pays that bill, Medicare has an interest in your personal injury case because Medicare wants to get paid back at the end of your case – Medicare has a lien on your personal injury settlement. If you don’t pay Medicare back and/or resolve that Medicare lien, Medicare may not cover your future medical bills.
